Welcome to eurosmail
The European Students Mailing List

WHY A EUROPEAN STUDENTS MAILING LIST?

Obviously Europe is growing together. Many issues of societies are already decided upon by the EU and not anymore by the national governments.
Although educational issues are still decided upon by the member states, an advice can be given by the EU (Maastricht Treaty Paragraph 126 and 127).
In this decision making process, i.e. the year of Livelong Learning, students didn't play an important role.
Also arguments i.e. to change the financial support into a credit based system or to introduce student fees, are always backed by the development in other European countries. Ministers take situations in other European countries, either good or bad, as facts to back their unsocial and authoritarian changes within their countries. They are using the students lack of information about the situation in other European countries and our currently weak organisational skills.

Therefore students need to establish stronger links on the European level.

It is a necessity to exchange information about organising meetings, seminars and workshops. We should exchange our ideas on developing policies and demands.
Hopefully students in Europe will later coordinate themselfs to run campaigns and doing direct actions on a european scale.

MAILING LIST & NEWSGROUP

I am aware of the fact that there are already some newsgroups on the Internet dealing with issues concerning students in higher education. This mailing list will not try to copy them. It should be an additional offer.
A mailing list has the advantage to reach people who have an e-mail address, but no access to the Internet.

HOW TO SUBSCRIBE THE LIST

Just send a mail with Subject: 'ticket [ YOUR.address ]' and empty mailbody to "eurosmail-request@stud.uni-hannover.de" .

E.g. Subject: ticket Ingo.Jaeger@stud.uni-hannover.de

Then you get your ticket for subscribe/unsubscribe and a help file via email.

WHAT SHOULD BE FOUND IN THE EUROPEAN STUDENTS MAILING LIST

In Europe there are about 5000 universities and all of them have a student body and a regular publication.
I would like to invite all of you producers and readers of theses regulars to post the articles and comments.

For the "representatives" of students and youth on the local, national and european level, i.e. members of the executive in ESIB - The National Unions of Students in Europe and the Youth Forum, this list could be a chance for more transparency of Your work.
So please let us know about what is going on in the Commission and the Parliament of the EU and other relevant bodies, i.e. Council of Europe.

Additionally there should be announcements about festivals, seminars or other meetings You organize, i.e. The International Students Festival in Trondheim (ISFiT) , ISWI, ISWinT,...
A regular forward of the calender from UNITED or NEWSLETTER-ICP would be nice.

Of course everybody who would like to comment on certain issues should do so. Perhaps we could discuss some interessting topics through the list as well.
But please keep in mind, this list should mainly distribute NEWS and INFORMATION.

Progressive news and information is highly welcomed.

Besides individuals and organizations from outside Europe are also invited to participate. I highly appreciate the regular of the The Asian Students Association ASA-NEWS.
Probably we could start some solidarity actions.

WHAT SHOULD N O T BE FOUND IN THE EUROPEAN STUDENTS MAILING LIST

This is not a chat or flirt line. Noise, flames, sexist, racist and fascist comments/articles will not be forwarded as long as I am moderating this list.

WHAT LANGUAGE SHOULD BE USED?

The language barrier is one of the first problems people face when they meet on the international level.

If you like to post an article in your mothertongue and you have no other alternative, please do so. But be aware of the fact that i.e. an article in German is difficult to understand for non-German speaking people and therefore would not develop its full potential.

My advice would be to write in English or French.

ADMINISTRATIONAL COMMENTS

As mentioned above, this will be a moderated list. I will try to read all of the incoming mailings and forward them. I will get support from Andreas Duwe in Luebeck.

This project should run for one year until the 31st of december 1997.

In November 97 should be a decision on if and how this mailing lists future should look like. This assumes, of course, that there is a demand for this mailing list.

PERSONAL REMARKS

I think it is necassary to introduce myself, so you know a little bit about myself and my past activities.

My name is Ingo Jäger. I was two year full time officer for international affairs at the students union of Hannover University (1993-1995).
Besides I am a member of the Foundation for International Communication - FIC.

During that time I took part in several national and international meetings, conferences and festivals.
Some examples

A major lack in between these meetings was the lack of communication. Additionally not many people got to know about the statements and ideas of the participants.

With this mailing list I hope to establish a permanent information flow, so people don't have to invent the wheel over and over again before start working.

LOVE, PEACE & RESPECT

Ingo Jaeger
