CHILE: Students and Police clash in Chile

SANTIAGO

On Tuesday, the 9th of September, university students protested the upcoming 24th anniversary of the military coup by Gen. Augusto Pinochet against the elected government of Salvador Allende. Police used tear gas and water cannons to scatter the demonstrations.

The Police moved in quickly as students erected barricades with classroom chairs and burning tires in front of two Santiago campuses.

As reported by Associated Press (AP), around 20 students were detained during the clashes with the police, referring to a statement of rector Eduardo Morales, University of Santiago.

In recent years similar protests occurred around the 11th of September, the day of Pinochets coup and killing of President Allende.

The government warned to mobilise 5,000 police to maintain law and order for Thursday, still a legal holiday declared by the 1973-90 Pinochet regime.

They expect "extremist groups planning acts of violence".
