Founded in July 1972 the All Africa Students Union (AASU) has turned twenty-five this year. From the moment of its birth the continental organisation set about harnessing and co-ordinating student unions in Africa and their efforts to bring about peace, justice, development and the overall advancement of Africa. In this process AASU has come a long way in their fight against colonialism, neo-colonial exploitation, apartheid and violation of student rights. Present developments on the continent such as civil wars, neo-liberal policies and their effects on education as well as the marginalisation of Africa in world affairs confront AASU with new challenges. | As AASU marks its 25th anniversary the Secretary General, Benson Obua-Ogwal, takes pride in the achievements of the organisation but also calls for "sombre reflections and rethinking to usher the student movement in Africa into the 21st century." The Executive Secretariat of the IUS wishes AASU happy celebrations and brighter prospects for the student movement in Africa. Congratulations!
